This second collection of articles by Patricia Crone brings together studies on the development of early Muslim society, above all the army with which it was originally synonymous, from shortly after the Prophet's death until the mid-Abbasid period. The focus is on the changes that the Arab tribesmen underwent thanks to settlement outside Arabia, their strained relations with converts from the conquered population, and their gradual eclipse by them.

L'histoire politique à l'époque moderne est faite de guerres que leur grand nombre rend confuses en apparence. Le but de ce livre est donc avant tout de donner un tableau simple et clair des conflits qui ont façonné l'Europe au moment où émergent des États qui cherchent à affirmer leur puissance par les armes et la diplomatie. Il ne s'agit pas simplement de recenser guerres et batailles, mais surtout de souligner les grands enjeux, dynastiques, territoriaux, politiques ou religieux. Les principaux affrontements sont analysés, en montrant comment ils ont modifié des équilibres aussi fragiles que complexes. Cette histoire des relations internationales ne saurait ainsi se limiter aux rivalités entre les grandes monarchies d'Occident, mais intègre l'ensemble des acteurs européens, de l'Empire ottoman jusqu'au Portugal, sans négliger le poids alors considérable de l'Europe du Nord et de l'Est.

This is the first complete edition of the Chronicon Anonymi Cantuariensis, a contemporary narrative that provides valuable insights into medieval war and diplomacy, written at Canterbury shortly after the mid-fourteenth century. The previous edition, published in 1914, was based on a manuscript from which the text for the years 1357 to 1364 was missing. Presented here in full with a modern English translation, the chronicle provides a key narrative of military and political events covering the years from 1346 to 1365. Concentrating principally on the campaigns of the Hundred Years War and their impact upon the inhabitants of south-east England, the author took advantage of his position on the main news route between London and Paris to provide a detailed account of a crucial phase in British and European history.

The Long Walls joining Athens with its harbors are universally recognized as symbols of naval imperialism and the lynchpin of a radical departure from traditional Greek military strategy during the later fifth century B.C. Nevertheless, many important questions about the structures remain disputed or simply neglected. As the first comprehensive history of the Long Walls, the present study dates each construction phase, examines the function of the structures from beginning to end, and chronicles their fluctuating viability. The analysis is driven by the proposition that the Athenians would not have relied on the walls to the sea when their navy did not control the sea lanes effectively. This full consideration of the Long Walls' development and strategic prominence over time will enable accurate assessment of their position in Greek military and political history from classical through early Hellenistic times.
